COLUMBIA, Mo. - A 12th inning home run by Cody Ehlers gave Missouri a 5-3 win over Washington Saturday in non-conference action at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. Missouri is now 13-16 this season while Washington is 12-14-1.
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Mick Weiss doubled to left field to lead off the frame before coming around to score on Jody Roughton's double to center field. Washington scored a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead.
Weiss tied the game when he led off the fourth inning with a home run to right-center field. The homer was the sixth of the season for Weiss and his fourth in the past three weeks - all coming in the second game of a three-game series.
Washington got a solo home run in the fifth inning by Jay Garthwaite to retake the lead, this time by a 3-2 margin.
The Tigers got a leadoff double by Brent Lacy in their half of the fifth inning. Lacy moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Cassis before scoring on an infield out by Jayce Tingler. Both teams had chances to score from that inning on but came up empty.
Missouri's Travis Wendte worked his way out of a jam in the 12th inning after allowing a walk and a single to open that frame. Wendte got a fielder's choice and an inning-ending double play to escape the threat.
In the Tigers' half of the 12th, W.T. Hoover reached on an one-out error. He moved to second base after a pickoff attempt went awry for another error. Ehlers then hit a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his eighth home run of the season and the final margin. Wendte picked up the win to move to 2-1. He pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
Weiss had three hits for the Tigers while Ehlers and Lacy each had two. The win was Missouri's second extra-inning victory of the season.
The two teams will meet again Sunday at noon.
