The Missouri Track & Field team was at two different venues this weekend, and both meets were good to the Tigers.
Russ Bell's personal-best throw of 197-9 in the discus automatically qualified him for the Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Jefferson City, Mo., native won the event at the Tom Tellez Invitational in Houston, Texas. Bell also won the hammer throw with his mark of 196-10. His throw in the hammer set both the meet record and the stadium record.
Things were good for Missouri at Stanford University as well. Adam MacDowell provisionally qualified in the 10,000m at the Stanford Invite, as he ran in his personal-best time of 29:41.67.
The middle distance and distance runners competing at Stanford University had career weekends with seven athletes getting personal bests in their events.
Amanda Bales just missed her PR in the 800m, but finished third overall and first in her heat, running in a time of 2:12.36. In the men's 800m, freshmen Rem Moll and Travis Pearman each had their collegiate-best times. Moll ran the event in 1:53.17 with Pearman following in a time of 1:53.88.
In the women's 5000m, three women had career bests. Serena Ramsey ran in 17:09.89 to finish second in her section, with Kimberly Moore (17:14.53) and Lisa Buffington (17:15.20) following in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Amy Chipman had her career best in the 10K, as she finished in a time of 35:29.58. Freshman Josh Davis finished the 5000m in 14:26.50 and sophomore David Mertens ran a 3:57.29 in the 1500m -- both personal bests for the newcomers.
The Tom Tellez invite was no different for the Tigers as several other athletes had career-best days in their events.
Freshman Adam Burla had his best-ever effort in the men's hammer. He placed sixth with his throw of 157-8. Sophomore Ann Snider also had her PR in the hammer with her toss of 147-10.
In the shot put, Janae Strickland won the women's event with her mark of 48-8.25, and Christian Cantwell won the men's shot with a mark of 62-4.5. The Tigers also swept the high jump titles -- Christi Myers won the women's high jump (5-8.5) and Jason Edmonds won the men's event with his personal best jump (6-11.75).
The Tigers will be home April 5-6 for the Missouri Relays held at Audrey J. Walton Track/Soccer Complex.
