FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Missouri thrower Christian Cantwell can now say he is a four-time All-American after Friday's shot put competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Cantwell's toss of 67-0.5 gave the Eldon, Mo., native a third-place finish behind two of the world's leaders in the event. His finish in the event gives Cantwell his fourth All-America honor. Winning the shot was Nebraska senior Carl Meyerscough's throw of 69-9. Idaho senior Joachim Olsen was second with his mark of 69-6.75. Junior Russ Bell placed 16th (59-5.5) in the event.
"This was as great a competition in the shot as the NCAA has had in my memory," head coach Rick McGuire said. "I am thrilled for Christian. He did a great job today. We're going home with a smile on our face, and we'll see if we can throw far in the weight throw tomorrow."
Also competing Friday were juniors Timothy Dunne and Stewart Kimball in the men's 800-meter run prelims. Dunne finished 12th in 1:50.13 and Kimball was 15th with his time of 1:51.86. Both Dunne and Kimball were at the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers.
Cantwell, Bell and Micah Shanks will participate in the men's weight throw and Ann Marie Brooks will run in the women's 3000m in Saturday's events.
