NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Missouri fell victim to a pair of big innings and suffered an 8-4 loss to Southern Illinois 8-4 at Maestri Field at Privateer Park on the University of New Orleans campus. Missouri is now 3-3 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after stringing together three hits and a walk. Unfortunately, Jayce Tingler, who led off the inning with a bunt single, was the lone Tiger to score as MU left the bases loaded.
After Southern Illinois tied the game with a run in the third inning, the Salukis exploded for four runs in the fourth inning. Cory Newman's triple plated three of those runs while Newman scored on interference.
In the fifth inning, SIU scored three times after recording six hits to take an 8-1 lead. Missouri rallied with three runs in the eighth inning after a two-run home run by Lee Laskowski and a solo shot by Cody Ehlers. However, after cutting the lead to 8-4, MU could not come any closer.
Laskowski had three hits for the Tigers while Ehlers and Tingler each had two. Freshman Travis Wendte (Moore, Okla.) struck out four batters in two innings.
Missouri faces New Orleans, which is 2-0 in the tournament after a pair of ninth-inning rallies and 4-1 overall, Sunday at 1 p.m.
