PHOENIX - Missouri used a four-run, ninth-inning rally to win its third-straight game of the 2002 season Sunday as the Tigers defeated Washington, 10-9. The game was played at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in the Rawlings Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament.
Jayce Tingler (Jr., Smithville, Mo.) drove in the game-winning run as the Tigers had loaded the bases with no outs. Missouri loaded the bases on three singles before a walk to Chris Julo sent in one run. A single to right field from catcher Brian Desch sent home a second run and Luke Cassis was hit with a pitch to send home the tying run. With the bases loaded and no outs, Tingler lined a single through the left side of the drawn-in infield to send home Julo with the winning run.
Abel Newton (Fr., Russellville, Ark.) recorded his first collegiate win with a three-inning relief stint. Newton struck out four batters and allowed one run.
Missouri rallied from an 8-3 deficit after six innings. The Tigers plated two runs in the seventh inning and a run in the eighth before the four-run outburst. Washington, which was receiving votes in several polls, had defeated the Tigers by a 10-6 score in Missouri's season opener.
Tingler and Jody Roughton, who also homered in the game, each had two hits for Missouri. Mick Weiss had four hits while Cody Ehlers and Luke Cassis each had three hits. Weiss had two doubles and a triple while Ehlers had two doubles and a home run.
The Tigers, now 3-1, play nationally ranked Notre Dame Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the University of New Orleans Maestri Classic. Missouri will also play Southern Illinois Saturday and New Orleans on Sunday (Feb. 24).
