NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Missouri saw its three-game win streak fall by the wayside as it suffered a 7-6, 10-inning loss to No. 4/9 Notre Dame in the New Orleans Maestri Classic on Friday.
The Tigers twice rallied to tie the game or take the lead but could not come up with another effort in the 10th inning.
Notre Dame took an early 1-0 lead after Steve Stanley led off the game with a single and stole a base. After advancing to third on a groundout, Stanley scored on a one-out single by Brian Stavisky.
MU tied the game in the second inning after Mick Weiss led off the frame with a walk. He stole second base and moved to third base on an infield out. Weiss scored when Ryan Rallo doubled to right field.
The Tigers erupted for three runs in their half of the third inning. Felipe Tetelboin singled to open the inning before Jody Roughton singled down the right-field line. After an out, Weiss singled off of the back of Notre Dame starting pitcher Peter Ogilvie to score Tetelboin. ND third baseman Andrew Bushey threw the loose ball away, allowing Roughton to score and Weiss to move into second base. Rallo singled to center to drive in Weiss to give MU a 4-1 lead. The Tigers pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fourth when Jayce Tingler scored on a Cody Ehlers' single.
Notre Dame scored three runs, to cut the MU lead to 5-4, in the fifth inning as it strung together four hits. Notre Dame used a walk, an error and a wild pitch to take a 6-5 lead before Ehlers homered to right field and tie the score, 6-6. The homer was Ehlers' third of the season.
Notre Dame took advantage of two infield errors to plate a run in the 10th inning and take a 7-6 lead. Missouri led off the 10th inning with a single by W.T. Hoover but was stranded as Notre Dame won its season opener.
Missouri, now 3-2, will play Southern Illinois at 5 p.m. Saturday before facing New Orleans Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mizzou/UNO game was originally slated for a 2 p.m. start but was recently changed to 1 p.m.
