PHOENIX, Ariz.- Cody Ehlers doubled and tripled and drove in four runs as the Missouri Tigers improved to 2-1 on the 2002 season with an 11-7 victory over the University of Portland (1-2) on Saturday night in Phoenix. Missouri will play its final game in the Rawlings Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 CST against the University of Washington.
The Tigers fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but tallied two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an Ehlers' double to cut the lead to 3-2. Portland upped its lead to 5-2 in the third inning when Travis Hanson connected for a two-run home run off of Missouri starting pitcher Drew Endicott (1-0) to make it a 5-2 game.
The bottom of the fourth inning proved to be the turning point of the game. Missouri used three bases-on-balls on two hit batters to its advantage and Jody Roughton (2-for-4) delivered a big two-run single as the Tigers tallied seven runs in the inning to take an 8-5 lead. Missouri never looked back. Senior Aaron Paterson relieved Endicott in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out and retired the next two Portland batters to get the Tigers out of the jam. Paterson went on to pitch three solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three.
Ehlers provided some insurance for the Tigers in the eighth inning with a two-run triple to give Missouri an 11-6 advantage. After Paterson gave up a run in the top of the ninth inning, redshirt freshman Garrett Broshuis came in and retired two batters to earn his first career save.
