PHOENIX - The University of Missouri Tigers battled back from a 7-0 deficit, but the comeback fell short as the Tigers dropped their season opener to the University of Washington by a score of 10-6 on Thursday night. The Tigers (0-1) will play the University of Portland Friday afternoon in the second game of the Rawlings Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament.
Washington jumped out to the early lead after striking for four runs off of Missouri starting pitcher Matt Hobbs (0-1). The Huskies tallied four runs in the second inning and Tyler Davidson's second home run of the game came in the third inning gave Washington a 5-0 advantage. The Huskies added two more runs in the fifth inning to knock Hobbs out of the game.
Washington starting pitcher Shawn Kohn (1-0) hurled five innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just three Missouri hits, but was pulled after the fifth inning. The Tigers scored three runs off of UW reliever Zack Daniels in the sixth inning, led by RBIs by Jayce Tingler and Jody Roughton. Roughton, making his Missouri debut, went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Missouri added two more runs in the seventh inning to cut the Washington lead to 7-5.
Washington's Tila Reynolds tripled to lead off the seventh inning. Davidson (4-for-5, 4 RBI) drove in Reynolds for his fourth RBI of the game to give UW an 8-5 lead.
The Tigers rallied for a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lee Laskowski. Missouri had a chance to take another chunk out of the Washington lead when Ryan Rallo singled with two outs in the inning, but a base running error by Mick Weiss led to the third out of the inning instead of the Tigers' seventh run.
Washington added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and Tyler Shepple pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Huskies to close the game.
