The #20 ranked Missouri Tigers wrestling team swept a double dual meet against Central Missouri State University and Princeton University in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse on Sunday. The Tigers improved to 2-1 for the season.
The Tigers defeated Central Missouri State 41-12 in the second dual of the day. The Tigers then defeated Princeton 37-6 in the third and final dual of the day.
Mizzou started off fast out of the gates in their dual against CMSU as sophomore captain Tyron Woodley (ranked #5 in the country) pinned Lee Gatlin in 1:53 in the 165-pound match.
Sophomore Matt Turner scored a 13-2 major decision victory against Brett Barbarick in the 174-pound bout. Redshirt freshman Jeff Foust (184 lbs.) made it three straight victories with a technical fall in 6:57 against Kevin Grece.
The Mules' Seth Shippy pinned (6:25) Dante Stone in the 197-pound match to give the Mules their first points making it 15-6.
In the heavyweight match senior #16 Kevin Herron pinned Steve Berringer in :54 seconds to increase the Tigers lead to 21-6 at the halfway point.
The Tigers then scored three straight victories. Senior captain Mark Bader defeated Drew Passley 6-0 in the 125-pound bout, Chris McCormick pinned (2:48) Wade Kilgore in the 133-pound match and # 15 J.P. Reese scored a technical fall, 20-3 in 5:31, to defeat Tom Goss in the 141-pound bout.
The Mules' Eric Pizzi won, via a Jeremy Spates forfeit in the 149-pound match to make 35-12.
# 15 Kenny Burleson ended the dual with a pin of Greg Northern in 2:49, in the 157-pound bout.
The dual against Princeton started off with a little deja-vu, as Woodley pinned Charlie Wiggins in 5:28 and Turner scored another major decision victory, defeating Andrew Avsec 13-2.
In the 184-pound match, two 2002 NCAA All-Americans faced off. Senior Scott Barker, wrestling in his first match of the season, defeated #3 Greg Parker 5-0.
Stone defeated Matt fisher with a 10-3 decision in the 197-pound bout to give him his first dual win this season.
Herron increased his dual meet record to 3-0 this season by pinning Alan Sista in 2:48. His three dual wins lead the team this season.
The Tigers then won four of the next five matches enroute to the 37-6 victory.
Bader defeated Seth Dunipace, scoring a 17-4 major decision. McCormick defeated Brian Kirschbaum, 10-2. Reese defeated Joe Clarke, 8-2.
John Knorring picked up a forfeit victory over the Spates, who was held out of competition to rest his ailing back, to put the Princeton Tigers on the scoreboard, 33-6.
Burleson ended the meet with a 13-3 major decision victory over Milo Adams.
In the first dual of the day, Princeton defeated Central Missouri State 29-16.
Next up for the Tigers is a grueling road trip against two Big Ten Conference teams. The Tigers take on #21 Purdue on Friday, December 20 in West Lafayette, Indiana. Then they travel south to Bloomington, Indiana to take on Indiana University on Saturday, December 21.
NEWS FROM THE MAT: Princeton and Missouri held two exhibition matches before their dual. Austin DeVoe pinned Princeton's Kenny Chu in 2:57 in the 125-pound exhibition and Jeff Foust defeated Princeton's Jack Fleming, 11-3 in the 184-pound exhibition...Scott Barker will wrestle at 184 lbs. this season. This is his third weight change in 4 years, he wrestled at heavyweight as a freshman then dropped weight and wrestled at 197 lbs. the past two seasons. He was ranked as high as #3 at 197 lbs. in preseason polls.
