Tiger Tennis Pair Tearing Through Field at Indoor Championships

Nov. 8, 2002

University of Missouri tennis players Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova advanced to the doubles semifinals at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas. The Tiger tandem beat Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette of Stanford 8-4 in the first round. In the quarterfinals the duo fought off three match points before defeating Lindsay Dawaf and Julie Rotondi of Florida 9-8 (9-7). That victory put Juric and Sevcikova in the semifinals, a place where no Tiger team has ever been at the indoor championships. Missouri tennis coach Blake Starkey said, "They're playing very well. They are beating a lot of teams that are seeded and ranked higher than they are."

Urska Juric lost in the first round of the singles tournament to Courtney Bergman of Harvard 6-2, 6-3 and will play in the consolation round against Stanford's Alice Barnes. Juric and Sevcikova semifinal opponents tonight are Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub of Tulane.
