Box Score
Waco, Texas-In one of their most physical games of the year, the Missouri Tigers and Baylor Bears kept the excitement of the game going scoring seven combined goals. Mizzou came out with the victory owning four goals in the match. The Tigers were able to claim the hard fought victory although Baylor out shot Mizzou 16-to-13. Out mastering the Bears on the offensive however, MU took eight of its 13 shots on goal while keeping Baylor to just 6-of-16.
Also adding to the rough and tumble game, the two teams amassed a combined 31 fouls and three yellow cards in the match. In addition, the clock was stopped on four separate occasions as athletic trainers were called to attend injuries on the field.
Baylor opened the game scoring a trick in just under five minutes of play. Candace Reilly sent a cross through the center of the Mizzou box. Tiffany Boshers went up to head the ball that fell just behind the goal line.
Mizzou quickly countered proving their offensive dexterity skilfully setting up a game-tying play. Kristen Heil brought the ball through the center of the Baylor defensive line before flicking a pass to forward Adriene Davis. Davis took a two-touch opportunity to bluff Baylor goalkeeper Tanya Sena and send the ball over the goal line.
The duo reversed the play just minutes later. Jennifer Nobis knocked a high ball to the ground where Davis took possession just outside the Baylor box. The junior knocked a quick flick to Heil for the goal.
Reserves Melissa McLellan and Amber Swinehart paired up to score the Tigers' third goal of the period. McLellan launched a cross from the far side of the field while Swinehart maneuvered herself into the Baylor goal box where she masterfully knocked the ball down with a header.
The Bears refused to leave the half without a little redemption as they put in their second trick of the game at the 40:56 minute mark. Defender Melissa Humke unleashed a long 30-foot shot on Mizzou goalkeeper Megan Duncan. The ball ricocheted off the cross bar as Duncan jumped for the block. Before she could reposition, Kate Hensman broke through the Missouri defense to score on a header.
Fluid ball movement through the midfield brought Missouri its fourth goal of the game. Taking possession on the Mizzou half, the trio of Heil, Swinehart and Suzy Probst worked the ball through the half field to Davis. Quick on the turn Davis passes a ball through the Baylor defense to Missy Peabody. The forward took the ball through the box, protected on the flank by Shea Swoboda for an easy shot.
An unrelenting Baylor team continued to plug at Mizzou however, bridging the gap back within one point. The Bears brought the ball down the field with a long punt. Whitney Barrett picked it up and sent a wide cross from the near sideline where Kristin Ruef dove in for the goal.
The goal proved to be Baylor's last due to the strengths of the Missouri defensive line. Serving as MU's standard defensive center field switch player, Probst pulled through with a valuable save. Likewise, defensive specialist Lacy Moore thwarted a cunning Baylor effort with just two minutes of play.
The win brings the Tigers and Mizzou keeper Megan Duncan to a 7-3-2 record on the year. Overall, Duncan allowed three goals while making three saves in the match.
