Missouri Topples Texas Tech in 5-1 Victory

Oct. 4, 2002

Box Score

Lubbock, Texas-The Mizzou women's soccer team pulled through with a 5-1 victory over the Texas Tech Raiders to bring their road record to 3-0-1. The Tigers out shot the Raiders 27-to-8, including a 14-to-6 shot on goal disparity. The win brings Missouri's season record to 6-3-2 and boosts its Big 12 Conference mark to 1-1-1.

Missouri was quick to announce its authority in the game scoring within the first 10 minutes of play. Karen Bauer sent a corner kick into the Texas Tech goal box. Midfielder Kristen Heil got a foot on the ball, but a Raider defender blocked her shot. Forward Adriene Davis collected the deflected ball and flicked it to defender Lacy Moore for the goal.

Not satisfied with her first taste of offensive power this season, Moore came back to score a second goal just three minutes later. Midfielder Amber Swinehart crossed a ball from the far side of the field where Moore used her 5-foot-9 height differential to knock the ball into the net with a skilful header.

Next up on the docket for Mizzou, the Tiger forward trio of Jennifer Nobis, Adriene Davis and Melissa Peabody came together in a fine display of MU team work. Nobis brought the ball up the line and sent a pass into the center of the Raider box where Davis was able to turn the ball and flick a quick pass to Peabody.

With just 28 seconds remaining on the first period clock, Missouri's game rhythm lurched when a foul was called on a Mizzou player inside the goal box resulting in a Raider penalty kick. Catie Arsenault took the one-on-one opportunity with Missouri goalkeeper Megan Duncan to score Texas Tech's only goal of the game.

Unwilling to let the mistake slide, Missouri came back into the second half with a renewed energy to once again dominate the Red Raiders. Pulling out her signature throw, Nobis launched a ball from the sideline into the Texas Tech box where midfielder Karen Bauer was able to knock the ball to the ground. Senior Suzy Probst capitalized on the strategically placed ball sliding it over the goal line.

Missouri put its final point on the board with a trick by Peabody. Forward Shea Swoboda sent a cross to midfielder Erica Pusch, who launched a powerful shot on the Texas Tech keeper Beth Lippert. The goaltender blocked the ball as the Mizzou forward line rushed the net for backup support. The Tigers' practised positioning enabled Peabody to head the ball into the net before Lippert could regain composure.

Overall, the Tigers forced Lippert to make nine saves while allowing five goals. Mizzou goalkeeper Megan Duncan allowed just one goal while making five saves to bring her season record to 6-3-2.

Missouri continues a three-game road stanza against Baylor in Waco, Texas on Sun., Oct. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Tigers then travel to Norman, Okla., to take-on the Oklahoma Sooners next Friday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
