Oct. 18, 2002

Box Score

Columbia, Mo.-The Mizzou women's soccer team picks up their ninth win of the season with a stunning 3-0 victory over Iowa State. The Tigers boost their record to 9-4-2, with a 4-2-1 record in Big 12 Conference play after overpowering the Cyclones. Missouri out shot ISU 21-to-9. The Cyclones however put forth an impressive six shots on goal for a 66 percent SOG average. Mizzou took seven on goal, scoring three with two assists.

Iowa State picked up the game starting a formation unseen by the 2002 squad. The Cyclones played a two-four-four structure that contrasted with Missouri's three-four-three standard. Adding uniqueness to the uneven lines, a drizzling rain and slippery playing field helped keep the match interesting.

From the start, Missouri took control keeping the Cyclones to taking their first shot after almost 20 minutes of play. Kristina Baumann ripped off her first shot with deadly precision, but the ball deflected off the far corner of the cross bar. Despite brief glimpses of offensive mettle, neither team was able to produce a forward thrust great enough to put points on the board during the first half.

The Tigers quickly launched into an aggressive pursuit toward the ISU goal entering into the second period. Just moments after intermission was broken, MU forward Adriene Davis maneuvered a direct shot inside the penalty box that skimmed the top of the net going high. The shock threw ISU into a frenzied effort to match the play as Megan DiGiacomo followed up taking a long shot at the Mizzou net. Goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk was poised however and brought the ball down with a diving save.

Tied one-to-one with skilful chances, Missouri determined to retake the lead without looking back. Just under ten minutes into the second half, Melissa Peabody dribbled a fast ball up the far side and chipped it through the center of the penalty area where forward Jennifer Nobis released the game-winning shot.

Dissatisfied with her small taste of victory, she came back just six minutes later to score her second goal of the game unassisted. The freshman collected a ball in the midfield. Using her tremendous speed and aggressive footwork, Nobis dribbled through the Cyclone defensive lines to take a 20-yard shot. The feat marks her second straight game scoring double-goals.

Leading 2-0, Nobis' heroics rallied Missouri to produce some of the team's most heart clinching plays this season. Midfielder Kristen Heil ripped off a dangerous shot that ricocheted off the far post. Sophomore Karen Bauer lobbed a pass into the goal box that slipped through ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman's fingers and began to roll toward the Iowa State goal line. Desperately Chapman made a diving save to snag the ball just before it crossed the scoring border.

Missouri focused on serving passes to Nobis looking for the team's first hat trick of the year. The forward broke through the Iowa State defense on another unassisted run and launched a shot from the edge of the penalty box but missed going wide. Her intensity continued as the Tigers pressed the Iowa State goal with dangerous chances. As Mizzou's vigour increased Chapman's ability and luck rose to the challenge.

Unfortunately for Nobis, her third goal was revoked due to an offsides call. In a harried fight for control inside the ISU box, Peabody slid a desperate ball to Davis. Before the forward could shoot Chapman rushed from the box. Davis flicked a ball over the goalkeeper's head enabling Nobis to slide the ball into the net. The linesman found Nobis offsides however invalidating the goal.

As the clock ticked down, Missouri continued to look for a third goal from the freshman. With just over 12 minutes left on the clock, Nobis turned the tables and dished out an assist to supplement her two goals instead. Sending a parallel pass into the center of the field, the forward enabled Davis to unleash a 17-yard shot to sum up Missouri's scoring blitz.

In the goal box, Krawczyk had her fair share of the action making six saves on her way to a 3-0-0 season record and her first shutout of the year.
