Oct. 13, 2002

Box Score

Columbia, Mo.-The Mizzou women's soccer team earned its eighth victory of the season with a 5-1 win over the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Tigers bring their season record to 8-4-2 with a 3-2-1 mark in the Big 12 Conference.

Missouri didn't waste any time exerting its dominance in the match scoring its first goal after just over a minute of play. Midfielder Karen Bauer crossed in a corner kick and freshman forward Amber Swinehart finished the play with a quick shot to score.

Melissa Peabody came back just nine minutes later to score Missouri's second goal. Midfielder Kristen Heil worked the ball toward the OSU box where she flicked a rolling pass to Peabody in the center of the penalty area. The forward took a direct shot against Cowgirl goalkeeper Kat Doud to score.

Oklahoma State continued to pressure the Tigers throughout the first half. Adriene Davis took a dangerous swipe at the OSU goal, but was aggravated by defender Lisa Fulton. Turning the tables, Oklahoma State pressured Missouri for several minutes to end the period, but was unsuccessful as the Cowgirls continued to run into the robust wall of Missouri defenders.

OSU had a few brief glimpses at posting a score, including a free kick on the edge of the MU penalty box, that was shanked by forward Krista Dedmon leaving Oklahoma State with a 2-0 deficit going into intermission.

Missouri reopened the second period with a stinging repetition of the game's previous 45 minutes. Just 20 seconds into the second half, Peabody came up with her second goal of the game scoring on a masterful pass from Davis.

Fronting the game with a comfortable 3-0 lead, Mizzou's position antagonized a faltering OSU effort leading to an animated fray. With 33:50 remaining in the game, a foul was called inside the Tiger penalty box awarding the Cowgirls a direct kick. Missouri goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk successfully defended the one-on-one shot with a diving save. Before she could reposition herself however OSU took another hit on the Mizzou goal. Defender Lacy Moore pulled through with another impressive block giving Oklahoma State a corner kick opportunity. The heat of the moment reached its peak as both teams packed the box. Mizzou came out with possession however cooling the situation and refocusing the Tigers' attention.

Oklahoma State once again received an opportunity to manipulate the scoreboard, after its first ill-fated skirmish in the Missouri box. Taking a free kick from the midfield about 40-yards out, midfielder Jeni Jackson lobbed a ball behind Missouri's defensive pocket. OSU's Nikki Wojtowicz broke through the MU defensive ranks to take a one-on-one shot five-yards outside to score the Cowgirls only goal in the game.

Even with hopes of a shutout victory tarnished, Missouri refused to let up throughout the remainder of the game. The Tigers game back with just over 10 minutes ticking away on the clock to slap OSU with one final goal. Melissa McLellan launched a highflying ball over the left corner of the Oklahoma State goal. Like a scavenger in waiting, Nobis positioned herself under the ball and scored on a skilful header.

Overall, Oklahoma State outshot Missouri 15-to-11, but the Tigers shot an impressive 73 percent on goal taking 8-of -11 shots to the net, including five goals. Likewise, Krawczyk made six saves in the game allowing just one goal. OSU's Doud made just two saves while allowing five goals.

The Tigers continue play in Audrey J. Walton Stadium with two home games against Iowa State and Loyola. Missouri faces ISU on Fri., Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m., and takes on Loyola on Sun. Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
