Missouri Falls to Oklahoma in 2-0 Contest

Oct. 11, 2002

Box Score

Norman, Okla.-The Mizzou women's soccer team fell to Oklahoma in a 2-0 match to bring its season total to 7-4-2 with a 2-2-1 mark in the Big 12 Conference. The Tigers outshot the Sooners nine to four in the first period, but Oklahoma came back to turn the tables outshooting Missouri 11-to-5 in the second.

Goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk and the Missouri defensive line played a stalwart game. Opening the match, OU midfielder Lauren MacIver launched a powerful shot, but Krawczyk came through with her first heart stopping save of the year. Likewise, the backfield trio of Carrie Crossett, Lacy Moore and Ashley Gibbs each pulled through with splendid displays throughout the game. With just seconds to go in the first period, OU leading scorer Logan Womack barrelled toward the Mizzou goal, hindered only by the one-on-one opposition of Gibbs. Womack seemed no match for the Tiger however, as Gibbs used a swift slide stop to strip the ball from Womack and regain possession for Mizzou.

Opening the second half, the Missouri full backs continued to play tremendous defense. Moore, serving as Mizzou's sweeper, continued with her characteristic style of always being in the right place and the right time. Her cool confidence and hard-nosed aggression continually frustrated the opposition.

The defenders' constant pressure, forcing the Sooners to take wide and distant shots, unfortunately worked in favor of Oklahoma. With the Missouri defensive line cutting off all passing routes to OU forwards, MacIver chanced a long ball from around 35-yards out. The ball skimmed through the top of the Missouri net just out of reach from Krawczyk to score OU's first goal of the game.

The Sooners' renewed confidence pushed the team to score another goal just 10 minutes later when Logan Womack took a skewed shot from the left corner of the box to score unassisted.

Even with a 2-0 deficit, Missouri fought a hard battle through the remainder of the game. With just 1:10 left in the final period, Mizzou midfielder Kristen Heil remained intent on scoring. She flicked a header served in my freshman Amber Swinehart. OU goalkeeper Catherine Wade was on top of her game however, and pulled down a save. The Tigers forced eight saves from Wade overall, while Krawczyk defeated four of the Sooners' attempts.

Missouri returns home on Sun., Oct. 13 to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
