Tiger Women's Golf Roars to 2nd Place Finish in the Shoot-Out at the Legends

Oct. 8, 2002

Franklin, Ind. - The University of Missouri women's golf squad carded a final-round 300 and wrapped up second place at the "Shoot-out at the Legends" in Franklin, Ind., on Tuesday. Mizzou was in third heading into the final round, but capitalized on a round of 305 by the then second place team, Indiana, and very consistent play from the whole team to claim the runner up spot behind tournament champion Kent State. Head coach Stephanie Cooper said she was extremely pleased with the attitude the Tiger's displayed on the course and the focus they played with throughout the tournament.

"We continue to play with a lot of intensity and make intelligent decisions on the course," Cooper said. "We were very consistent throughout the entire tournament which is a reflection of the competitive spirit our kids bring to the table every day whether it be in practice or in a tournament."

Mizzou was the benefactor of inspired play by senior Elin Ohlsson, who shot an even-par round of 72 that featured 16 pars, a birdie and a bogey to finish 13th (74-78-72=224). Ohlsson was in 22nd heading into the final round after shooting a second-round 78 yesterday, but rebound nicely to move up nine spots. Freshman Denise Knaebel was equally as impressive playing by far her best tournament of the year. She was tied for 22nd with Elin Ohlsson after Day 1, but fired a final-round 73 to finish 14th (76-76-73=225). The 73 was Knaebel's best round of her career in tournament play.

Two other Tigers finished in the Top 20 for the tournament as sophomore Maria Ohlsson and freshman Kelli Strubinger tied for 17th, as both finished with a total of 226. This marks the first time this season that the Tigers have had four players who finished in the top 20 of a tournament.

Finishing not far out of the top 20 was sophomore Mindy Bullard, who was on fire in the second round yesterday with a 72, but finished the tourney with a 78 taking 24th place (79-72-78=229.) Wrapping up the Tiger scoring was freshman Stephanie Turner in 51st place (79-79-78=236.)

Mizzou will be off this coming week from the competition scene and will then travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Oct. 21-22 for their second-to-last tourney of the fall. For more information on Missouri women's golf, log on to www.mutigers.com.
