St. Charles, Mo. - After rounds of 288 and 282 yesterday, the University of Missouri was tied for fifth place heading into today's final round of the Nestle Purina Classic trailing tournament-leader Illinois by 11 strokes. Tuesday brought a wind of change for the Tigers, although the wind hardly blew at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course, as Mizzou shot a blazing 269 on the day and an 839 for the tourney, just three strokes behind tournament-champion Illinois. The Tiger's hosted the 14-team Tournament, which was held in St. Charles, Mo.
"I am extremely proud of the effort and focus our kids played with today," head coach Tim Robyn said. "Every member of the team provided something to the cause and everything really came together for us."
Three Tigers finished the tourney in the top 10 and four competitors shot sub-70 rounds on Tuesday. Junior Michael Radek was awesome the whole tournament shooting rounds of 72 (+1) and 67 (-4) on Monday, and then came back with a round of 68 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for second place.
Junior Brandon Knaub continued to be a rock-solid leader for Mizzou. After going 70-72 yesterday, Knaub was on fire on Tuesday firing a third-round low 66 to finish with a total of 208, good for a tie for 6th place overall. Senior Cory Ewert was equally flammable as he blazed to a third-round mark of 66 also tying for 6th with six other individuals, just three shots behind tournament-champion Drew Dalziel (67-67-71=205). Knaub and Ewerts final round tallys of 66 was just one stroke shy of breaking an MU individual round record.
After struggling in the first round on Monday with a 77, junior David Jenkins was impressive shooting rounds of 70 and 69 in the final two stanzas moving into a tie for 22nd place to end the tourney. Freshman Chris Mabry was solid in the final two rounds firing a 73 and a 74, finishing tied for 46th place. Senior Chris Happ, who played in the tournament as an individual, finished the tourney tied for 25th after firing a final round of 76 and a tourney total of 217.
Mizzou's next competition will be at the Nelson in Stanford, Calif., on Oct. 25-27 before wrapping up their fall season at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. on Nov. 1-3.
