Cantwell Shatters Records in Shot Put

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Christian Cantwell's throw in the men's shot put Saturday afternoon did damage to a number of record books.

Cantwell's toss of 68-2.5 in the shot set the school record, the Walton Stadium record and the meet record. His second-best throw in the outdoor shot is his 64-8 mark from March 16. Cantwell's personal-best and automatic-qualifying throw won the event and currently ranks second in the world this season.

Cantwell's teammates Russ Bell (60-3), Micah Shanks (57-7.25) and Adam Burla (51-5.5) placed second, third and fifth in the event, respectively. Bell's mark was a provisional qualifier.

Bell also had a provisional mark in the discus, with his winning throw of 193-4. In the women's discus, Carla Grewe had a meet record throw of 151-10, her personal best in the event. Following her was Heather Whitehead with her personal best (142-1) and Lindsey Markworth in third (141-7).

Fiona Asigbee and Abbe Ohneck shared the title in the women's long jump, as both had marks of 18-8.5. Freshman Angie Carter placed third with a mark of 18-6.

In the men's high jump, Jay Meystedt won on fewer misses with Jesse Sims getting second. Both cleared a height of 6-11.75.

Janae Strickland won the women's shot with her toss of 47-8.5. Lindsey Markworth came in third with her throw of 45-1. Strickland's throw broke the old meet record by nearly five feet.

Three Tigers took the top spots in the women's 1500m run. Jennifer Leerssen won (4:35.58), Amanda Bales was second (4:35.62) and Becky Froelker was third (4:39.12). Ryan Hampton ran unattached Saturday but had his personal best in the 1500m with his time of 3:53.69.
