Missouri Volleyball Opens Spring Schedule on Saturday

April 3, 2002

Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri volleyball team will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for its first action of the spring. The Tigers have been participating in spring workouts the past two months in preparation for the 2002 season as they look to return to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.

Head coach Susan Kreklow said the Tiger's work this spring has been very encouraging and that they have been able to experiment with several different lineups.

"The team is working extremely hard and we have been very pleased with the overall progress and development we are seeing," Kreklow said. "We are looking everyday for ways to improve and the team has bought into what we have to do now in order to be successful in the fall."

The Tigers open action in the spring tourney, which will be held at the University of Arkansas, at 9:30 am on Saturday against Oral Roberts University. Mizzou will then face host school Arkansas at 10:30 am, Jefferson College at 1 pm and then wrap up the day at 2 pm against the Razorbacks.

Mizzou will continue to workout for the next two weeks before heading to the University of Indiana on April 20 for their second tournament of the spring. The schedule for that day's tournament will be posted on www.mutigers.com next week.

MU Champions: On and Off the Court

The University of Missouri Volleyball Program is committed to the success of their student-athletes both on the court as well as off the court. The Tigers volunteer for many activities with the elementary, middle, junior high, and high schools, while also being involved in various community service projects throughout Columbia.

One of the most recent projects the Tigers have committed to is the Partners in Education Partnership with Smithton Middle School. The Tigers will dedicate time to Smithton Middle School by participating in activities and being present in the classrooms at least once every month.

Other projects that the Tigers have been involved in this year include volunteering for the Truman Club Winter Party, sponsoring and providing instruction for the Youth Volleyball League in Columbia middle and junior high schools, and providing free child care for MU staff and faculty members during the March Date Night.

Brazilliant! The Mizzou Volleyball program will include its second international player at the start of the 2002 season. Juliana Godoi will join the MU volleyball team from Sao Paula, Brazil. Godoi is very familiar with MU's coaching staff, as she was part of the Columbia College volleyball team when Susan and Wayne coached her and her team to a 1999 National Championship.

Godoi played in Brazil on the Sao Caetano Sport Club team where she led her team to the Interstate Championships in 1992, '93, '94, '95, and '96. In '91 and '92 Godoi was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player. In 1992, Godoi also played for the Junior National Team.

While at Columbia College in 2000, Godoi received many honors including First Team All Region Honors, All National Tournament Team Honors, and was selected as a Second Team All American.

Godoi will come to the United States from Brazil in time to begin training for the 2002 season.
