March 10, 2002

Final Stats

Columiba, Mo.-Junior Ingrid Werner pitched 6.0 scoreless innings allowing only four hits as the University of Missouri softball team dominated the Columbia University Lions, 5-0 in the Tigers second game of the day in the Missouri Classic on Saturday. The Tigers lost to Drake 3-0 earlier in the day.

Werner was definitely the story for Missouri as she walked only two and struck out one while inducing nine fly outs and nine ground outs to improve her season mark to 4-4. The Tigers also received a great suprise off of the bench in their contest against CU. Sophomore Daisy Mettlach, who led the Tigers with three home runs in the fall but had only made three starts this season, went 2-for-3 with two home runs. Mettlach's first home run was of the inside-the-park variety as she slammed a laser to deep center and used her excellent speed to motor around the base paths. Her second ding-dong was an opposite-way shot to deep right field that hit 3/4 the way up the Devine Pavilion Wall.

As good as the Tigers were in the scond game of the day, the struggled that much in the opener against Drake. They managed only five hits and no runs off of Drake's Katie Shimon and the Bulldogs were abel to spring for two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth en route to a 3-0 defeat of Mizzou. Sophomor

Rachael McGinnis saw her 13-game hit streak go by the way side in the Drake game as she went 0-for-3. However, McGinnis was able to begin a new hit streak against Columbia as she went 3-for-3 with two RBIs while scoring a run.

Mizzou is now 9-15 overall and wraps up play tomorrow in the Missouri Classic. Play will begin in Devine Pavilion and then probably relocate to University Field for the 2 pm game. For more information on Missouri Softball, log on to www.mutigers.com
