SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- If the first day of competition at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational was a foreshadowing of what is to come in day two's events, the Tigers have a lot to smile about.

Both the men and women had a number of athletes perform their personal bests in several events.

In the weight throw, both the men and women had great days. Junior Christian Cantwell won the event for the men, throwing a provisional-qualifying mark of 69-11.5. Junior Russ Bell was runner-up with his personal best throw (69-8.25). For the women, sophomore Holly Scherder placed third (51-5.75) in the weight throw. Janae Strickland (50-4.75) and Taby Robbins (48-5.25) each had PR's in the event.

The 5000m also proved to be a good day for the Tigers. Junior Amy Chipman placed second in the event in a time of 17:41.34. Senior Adam MacDowell ran the 5000m in 14:27.99, his personal best and .73 seconds off Missouri's indoor record.

The second and final day of events begins tomorrow at 10:30 EST.
