Tiger Tennis Opens Big 12 Conference Season Against Nebraska

Feb. 1, 2002

The University of Missouri women's tennis team will host its first Big 12 Conference match in the new Green Tennis Center at Mizzou on Saturday as Nebraska travels to Columbia. The match begins at 2 p.m., and admission is free.

Missouri is 2-0 after picking up a couple of strong 7-0 wins against Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State last weekend. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 68 in the nation. Missouri is led by the doubles duo of sophomore Urska Juric and freshman Katka Sevcikova. The tandem is ranked No. 2 in the Central Region and No. 19 in the nation. The Tigers also have three individuals ranked in the top 12 of the Central Region singles poll. Sevcikova is No. 8, freshman Mary Barry is ranked No. 11, and Juric is No. 12.

"This is the most talented and hardest working group I've had since I've been at Mizzou," Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "We are having a lot of fun together, and our work ethic has been amazing. We're looking forward to this match, but then again, we're looking forward to all of our matches this year. This year's team is a very exciting group of young women to watch play, and I really hope people in Columbia come out to watch them and check our amazing new tennis center,"

Nebraska is 2-0 on the year as well, with wins over Denver and Wichita State last weekend. Following Saturday's action, the Tigers will be on the road, taking on Colorado on Feb. 9 and Wyoming on Feb. 10.
