
Tigers Travel To Emporia State

COLUMBIA, Mo - The University of Missouri track and field team hits the road again this weekend to compete in the Emporia State Invitational.
Missouri Men Place second at Penn State
The University of Missouri track and field team wrapped Saturday's competition at Penn State with the Tiger men placing second and the women coming in third.
The men scored 182 points and were led by sophomore Christian Cantwell, who won the shot put and let loose an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 63-10.50. Also picking up wins on the men's side was senior Michael McDevitt (50-0), who broke the 50-foot mark in the triple jump for the first time in his career, junior Mike Pitts (14:29.96) in the 5000m, sophomore Stewart Kimball (1:52.28) in the 800m and freshman Gary File in the javelin (218-0).
The MU women scored 149 points and were led by first-place finishers senior Eli Sommerfeldt (39-3.25) in the triple jump and Jennifer Leerssen (2:12.70) in the 800m.
The Tigers also got a provisional mark in the shot put from sophomore Russ Bell (58-8.75).
Hils and Brooks Set School Records In California
Sophomore Kerry Hils and junior Ann Marie Brooks set MU school records in the steeplechase and 1500m at the Stanford Cardinal Invitational May 4.
Hils won the steeplechase with a time of 10:10.84, which was .. seconds lower than her old school record. She also finished six seconds ahead of Marget Larson of Colorado State.
Brooksplaced second in the 1500m with a time of 4:18.66, broke the record set by Sabrina Dornhofer in 1985.
Both Hils and Brooks have posted automatic qualifying times this season. Brooks has also qualified in the 5000m this season.
File Brothers To Compete Together At Emporia State
Brothers Gary and Darin File will compete on the same field at the Emporia State Invitational this weekend. Gary, who is a redshirt freshman and is coming off an injury plagued freshman campaign, posted a 218-0 mark at the Penn State Invitational last weekend (May 5), which is a personal best by 20 feet. He also bettered his brother's freshman personal best by 18 feet. Darin, who will compete at Emporia State unattached, was a three-time All-American at Missouri and is the current school record holder in the javelin (244-7). Darin was also a 2000 Olympic Trials finalist in Sacramento, Calif. Gary led the nation in 1999 with a mark of 240-1.
Coach's Corner
MU Head Coach Rick McGuire (St. Lawrence University, 1969) is in his 18th year coaching the Tigers. He led the 2001 women's indoor distance medley team to the national championship.The 2000 Big 12 Conference Indoor Coach of the Year, McGuire has guided 27 Missouri tracksters to 73 All-American honors. He has been inducted into the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Drake Relays Hall of Fame and has been a member of the 1992 and 1996 Olympic staffs.
McGuire is joined on the sidelines this season by assistant coaches Brett Halter (8th year), Jared Wilmes (1st year), Rebecca Wilmes (2nd year), Matt Candrl (1st year) and Chad Shade (1st year).
