LAWRENCE, Kan. - A pair of three-run innings fueled Kansas to a 7-4 victory over the University of Missouri Friday in Big 12 Conference baseball action at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Jayhawks (8-7 overall, 2-5 Big 12) scored three runs in both the second and sixth innings. Missouri (5-8-1, 1-6) scored all four of its runs in the top half of the sixth inning.

The Jayhawks took advantage of four hits in the second inning to score three runs and take a 3-0 lead. Kansas took a 4-0 lead with a run in the third frame.

MU answered with six hits in the sixth inning and scored four times to even the score. Missouri, which sent 10 men to the plate, got things started when Jon Williams singled. Ryan Stegall singled to center field before Mick Weiss drove in Williams with a single. Stegall scored and Weiss moved to third base on an error by KU starting pitcher Pete Smart. Weiss, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, scored on a single to left field by Kurt Propst. Propst eventually scored on a single by Luke Cassis. With a single by Jayce Tingler, the Tigers loaded the bases but left three runners. Missouri would eventually strand a total of 12 base runners in the contest.

KU came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Jayhawks used a walk and four singles to plate the runs.

Stegall led MU with three hits, his first three-hit game of the season, while Weiss had two hits. Weiss now has five multi-hit games in 2001.

Both teams had 12 hits in the contest. Missouri got 12 hits for the second-straight game and third time overall.

The Tigers and Jayhawks will play in Columbia Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) to complete the Big 12 series.
