
Missouri Tennis Defeats Washington U.

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri women's tennis team improved to 10-5 on the season as the Tigers defeated the Bears from Washington University by a score of 8-1 on a cold Saturday afternoon. The Tigers will head to a warmer climate out west in California where they will take on Cal State Northridge and Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and Friday.
Missouri's two through five players were all victorious on Saturday. Jessica Ferguson defeated the Bears' Nanoini Chaturvedvilla by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Caitlin Thompson was a winner at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-2 over Steph Crook. The Tigers' Cassie Drake won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 over Shilia Reddy of Washington U. Andrea Friedman dominated her opponent, Kat Copiozo, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 while Marina Zelenovic was a winner 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 over Jenn Kivitz.
The lone loss for the Tigers came at No. 1 singles when Urska Juric was forced to retire after going up 4-1 due to illness. Juric did contribute to the win in doubles competition as she teamed with Ferguson for an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles. Thompson and Drake claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles while Friedman and Zelenovic were victorious, 8-5.
Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey was pleased with the Tigers' effort and thanked several supporters for coming out and braving the cold to cheer on his team.
"We really appreciate members of the volleyball and soccer teams for coming out and cheering us on today," Starkey said. "I thought they gave our team a lot of energy. We were clearly the better team today."
