Sommerfeldt And Cantwell Provisionally Qualify

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. - Sophomore decathlete Knut Harald Sommerfeldt posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Texas A&M Multi-Event Festival Mar. 15-16.
Sommerfeldt, a native of Norway, recorded 7,367 points en route to a third-place finish. He bested the former MU school record of 7,355 held by countryman Espen Strindeberg.
Sophomore Christian Cantwell picked up the victory and recorded a provisional mark in the shot put (61-0.25). Fellow sophomore Russ Bell won the hammer throw with a mark of 181-11.
Sommerfeldt's sister, senior Eli Sommerfeldt, also competed at Texas A&M finishing third (4982). Senior Michelle Moran came in 11th (4852) while sophomores Fiona Asigbee (4626) and Abbe Ohneck (4312) finished 15th and 16th.
The Tigers open the 2001 outdoor season with a road trip to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational Mar. 31.
