Spates, Kopnisky fall in NCAAs

Iowa City, Iowa - The Tigers could not capitalize at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
In the first round of the tournament, 125-pound Justin Spates defeated Sean Shea from George Mason University 15-3. In the second round on Thursday, Spates was defeated 15-6 by Minnesota's third-ranked Leroy Vega. On Friday morning in the consolation bracket, Spates pinned Jerold Limongelli from Rider in 2:41. In the next round, Spates lost to No. 6 Matt Brown from Oklahoma 9-8.
In the first round at 174, Tiger captain John Kopnisky was defeated 6-5 by Penn State's Mark Becks. Thursday night in a consolation wrestleback pigtail match, Kopnisky beat Ryan Heiber from Ohio State 8-1, but fell to Cornell's Jim Stanec 2-1.
