COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri baseball team recorded a 1-0 Sunday over Kansas in Big 12 Conference action at Taylor Stadium.
The Tigers plated the game's lone run in the seventh inning. With one out, Kurt Propst singled to center field. W.T. Hoover entered the game as a pinch-runner for Propst and stole second base. Wes Fewell walked to bring up Luke Cassis. Cassis doubled to center field to score Hoover but Fewell was thrown out at the plate on the play.
The victory gave the Tigers the series (two games to one) and improves their record to 7-8-1 overall and 3-6 in the Big 12. Kansas falls to 8-9 and 2-7.
Stellar defensive play allowed MU to make the run stand despite giving up one hit in the eighth inning and two in the ninth inning. In the ninth, the Tigers turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the game as Kansas had runners on first and third base with one out. KU's Brent DelChiaro grounded out to Felipe Tetelboin who flipped the ball to Tony Vitello whose throw to Mick Weiss nipped DelChiaro at first to end the game. The defensive play gave Ryan Stegall his third save of the season and Shaun Marcum his first-ever collegiate victory. Marcum did not allow a hit in the first four innings.
Another defensive gem came in the top half of the seventh, Stegall speared a line drive and turned a double play as Kansas had runners on second and third base with one out. Stegall dove to his right to rob KU's Ryan Klocksien of a hit and his throw to third base erased Doug Dreher at third base and ended the inning to set up MU's offensive heroics in the bottom half of the frame.
Weiss extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fourth inning.
Missouri, which is in a nine-game homestand, plays Missouri Valley Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
