COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri track and field team takes to the road, traveling to the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
The Tigers finished second in the KU-KSU-MU Triangular Jan. 26, but sophomore Christian Cantwell threw an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 70-3.75 in the weight throw .
On his first throw of the meet, Cantwell threw a personal best 66-4, then on his second throw he blasted what is now the school, meet and Hearnes Fieldhouse record throw. Cantwell also won the shot put and provisionally qualified with his 60-0.25 mark.
The Kansas State Wildcats with 283 points won the Triangular, which is the only meet in the country scored by one combined team score. Missouri scored 253 points en route to a second-place finish followed by Kansas with 168 points. The Wildcats, for their efforts, were awarded "The Jug" for the 10th time in 12 years.
Junior Ann Marie Brooks came back in the last leg of the 3000-meter run to beat KSU's Amy Mortimer by .14 seconds with a time of 9:28.83. Her time was a provisional qualifying mark and made her the third Tiger to do so this year.
Also winning for the Tigers were seniors Ochuko Ekpere in the long jump (23-1.25), Eli Sommerfeldt in the triple jump (39-4), Jay Meystedt in the high jump (6-11), Ada Ibe in the 400m (58.06) and Ashley Wysong in the 600-yard run (1:23.61). The Tiger women's 4x800m relay team also won with a time of 9:19.83.
Mizzou had four individuals and one team qualify provisionally at last year's Meyo Invitational. Kerry Hils (mile), Sunny Gilbert and Ashley Wysong (800m), Derrick Peterson (800m) and the women's distance medley team. Overall, the Tigers won six events over the two-day event.
"We have used the month of January to prepare for the three great meets we have coming up in February," said MU Head Coach Rick McGuire. "This meet is on a big track with great competition. Every year it has been an outstanding meet and this year should be the same."
The Philanthropic Posse
(Tracksters Give Back At The Triangular)
Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State came together Jan. 26, to compete in a track meet for bragging rights and a prize (The Jug). On that night a bit of charity was displayed by all three schools as the student-athletes donated toys to the Ronald McDonald House. It was an effort of philanthropy orchestrated by the athletes and their donations were on hand at the meet for everyone to see.
MU Head Coach Rick McGuire has been known to call the MU-KU-KSU "trivalry" a "great relationship not a hate relationship."
Mizzou Women Ranked 25th
The Missouri women's track team is ranked 25th in this week's Trackwire national poll. The Tigers received eight votes and are in a four-way tie with Auburn, Georgetown and Illinois.
The Lowdown On The Throwdown
Sophomore Christian Cantwell currently has the third best mark in the weight throw (70-3.75) in the nation and the second best mark in the Big 12. Cantwell holds the eighth best shot put mark (60-0.25) nationally and second in the conference.
Fellow sophomore Russ Bell provisionally qualified for the shot put two weeks ago and is fourth in the Big 12 at 58-1.75.
Jettin'
Junior Ann Marie Brooks played cardiac kid at the Triangular last week. She trailed Kansas State's Amy Mortimer for most of the 3000m run. On the home stretch, Brooks kicked it into overdrive and won the race at the line by .14 seconds.
Brooks' 9:28.83 in the 3000m is tops in the Big 12 and fourth nationally. Her time is 10 seconds under the provisional qualifying standard and four seconds off the automatic qualifying mark.
Reviste'
(Brooks revisited and Tait first stanza)
Ann Marie Brooks is also third in the Big 12 in the mile. Her 4:50.1 is a personal best and a little more than a second off provisional qualifying.
Pole vaulter Lyndsey Tait just sets records. The freshman from Jefferson City broke the school record (which she twice previously owned) at the Triangular. She cleared 11-5.75 and just missed at 12 feet.
