Hampton, Va. - After winning two duals against Cal State-Bakersfield and Kent State on Friday, the Tiger wrestling team lost two on Saturday, which eliminated them from Virginia Dual tournament competition.
On Saturday, the Tigers first faced Central Michigan, who won the dual 22-9. Tiger wrestlers scoring wins against the Chippewas were Jesse Jordan at 157, John Kopnisky at 174, and Scott Barker at heavyweight.
After the loss, the Tigers dropped into the consolation bracket, where they once again faced Cal-State Bakersfield. This time, though, the Roadrunners reversed the outcome, beating MIssouri 17-15. The difference came in the 141-pound weight class, where Cal State's Zhon Kuraspediani avenged his Friday loss to J.P. Reese, beating the Tiger 141-pounder 4-1. In one of the nation's toughest dual schedules, Missouri's record now stands at 3-8.
On Friday, the Tigers won over Cal State-Bakersfield 19-18, then went on to beat Kent State in the quarterfinals by a score of 18-15.
Winning two matches Friday were Jesse West (Jr., 133 lbs.), J.P. Reese (redshirt Fr., 141 lbs.), Kenny Burleson (redshirt Fr., 149 lbs.), and No. 8 John Kopnisky (Jr., 174 lbs.). Picking up one win Friday were Jesse Jordan (Jr., 157 lbs.), Ry Stone (Jr., 197 lbs.), and Scott Barker (Fr., HWT). No. 11 Justin Spates (Fr., 125 lbs.) lost his two matches, as did Mark Vollmar (So., 165 lbs) and Rob Stolin (So., 184 lbs.).
In other Virginia Dual news, the Indiana Hoosiers defeated No. 20 Wisconsin 19-18.
The Tigers return home this week to face Lindenwood and MIssouri Valley at the Hearnes Center Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 and 3 p.m.
