
Tigers Open Indoor Track Season At Home

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri opened the 2001 indoor track season by winning 15 of the 31 events in the Missouri Invitational here Friday evening.
Sophomore Christian Cantwell qualified for the NCAA Championships on his first throw of the season in the weight throw. Cantwell, a native of Eldon, Mo., also set a school record with his 65-11 ? mark.
Freshman Lyndsey Tait also set a school record in the pole vault with her 11-0 effort. She finished in a three-way tie for first.
Other Tigers picking up wins in the field events were sophomore Fiona Asigbee in the long jump (19-0), senior Michelle Moran in the high jump (5-4), Cantwell (54-6 ?) and junior Heather Whitehead (42-2 ?) in the shot put.
Seniors Phil Councilor and Ada Ibe picked up wins in the mile and 600 yard run. Councilor posted a mark of 4:12.88 and Ibe turned in a time of 1:28.78. Sophomore Avis Evans took first in the 60-meter dash (7.81) and the 200m dash (26.47). Sophomore Kerry Hils (5:00.87) took first in the mile while another second-year Tiger, Stewart Kimball picked up the win in the 1000m (2:32.40).
Missouri split the relay races with Wichita State. The Tigers won the women's 4x400m relay (4:02.80) and the Shockers took the men's 4x400m (3:20.36).
Next up for Mizzou is the Tiger Invitational Jan. 19, in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse.
