Sept. 10, 2001
Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Missouri men's golf team got its 2001 fall season off to an outstanding start, as Tim Robyn's squad fired team rounds of 294 and 292 Monday to stand in second place after the first day of competition at the Husker Invitational, held in Lincoln, Neb. Monday featured 36 holes of play, with the final 18 scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Missouri's two-round team score of 586 puts them just four strokes off leader Lamar (1st -- 582). If the Tiger go on to win the tournament, it would mark the program's first tournament title since winning at Kansas in the fall of 1999.
Individually, three Tigers are among the top 10 through Monday's two rounds. Sophomore Brandon Knaub and junior Chris Happ shot identical totals of 145 to find themselves among a four-player tie for 6th place. The duo shot identical rounds of 73 and 72 on the day, and stand just two shots off individual leader Mike Mezei of Wyoming (1st -- 143).
Senior standout Mark McBride is hanging around the leaderboard after a pair of two-over par rounds of 73 left him tied for 10th after day one. McBride's two-round total of 146 is just three shots off the lead.
Senior Neal Stafford is tied for 29th place individually (75-75=150), and freshman Ben Scott (77-75=152) rounded out the Tiger lineup.
