Sept. 1, 2001

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Derrick Peterson will return from Beijing, China with his third overall medal from the World University Games.

Peterson was runner-up in the 800m finals today and adds his 2001 medal to his 1999 medals -- a gold in the 1,600m relay and a bronze in the 800m. Peterson's second-place performance was in a time of 1:45.49, his fastest time this season.

The former Missouri Tiger was in last place with under 400 meters left in the race but shifted into high gear to finish behind Morocco's Khalid Tighazouine (1:45.27).

The silver from Peterson, along with Team USA's silver in the men's 4x100m relay and two golds in the men's and women's 4x400m relays, helped bring USA Track and Field's total to 12 medals.
