COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Missouri's Jon Williams was selected in the 44th round by the San Francisco Giants during Wednesday's action of Major League Baseball's 2001 First-Year Player Draft.
Williams, who played both catcher and third base for the 2001 Tigers, finished his career with a .310 batting average and 116 walks. The walk total ranks 10th on the MU career charts. He hit .301 this past season with seven home runs and 44 runs batted in. Williams, who was one of two players to appear in all 56 games, had a team-high (tie) 14 doubles.
Williams joins Ryan Stegall (Houston Astros, 7th round) and Matt Hobbs (San Diego Padres (30th round) as draft choices in the 2001 draft. Missouri posted a 31-24-1 record in 2001.
