Missouri Track And Field Set To Compete At The NCAA Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Nine members of the University of Missouri track and field team will compete tomorrow at day one of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The five men and four women that qualified are the most ever for the Mizzou track and field team.

Brief bio sketches of the Tigers' qualifiers

Russ Bell
Sophomore
Jefferson City, Mo.

Bell is a provisional qualifier in the shot put and the discus. He is the school record holder in the hammer (202-8) set at Mount SAC. Aside from his school record his season-bests are 61-7 in the shot put (Big 12 Championships) and 189-11 in the discus (Missouri Relays).

Ann Marie Brooks
Junior
St. Joseph, Mo.

Brooks is an automatic qualifier in the 1500m and the 5000m. She ran a school record 4:18.66 in the 1500m at the Stanford Invitational. She is also the reigning Big 12 Champion in the 5000m.

Christian Cantwell
Sophomore
Eldon, Mo.

Cantwell is an automatic qualifier in the shot put and a provisional qualifier in the discus. He is the current school record holder in the shot put (64-8) set at Emporia State. Cantwell has won the Big 12 Championship in the shot put the last two seasons.

Kerry Hils
Sophomore
Moberly, Mo.

Hils is an automatic qualifier in the steeplechase and is the Big 12 Champion in that event. She also holds the MU record in the steeplechase (10:10.84) set at the Stanford Cardinal Invitational.

Jay Meystedt
Senior
Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Meystedt is a provisional qualifier in the high jump. He is the current Big 12 Champion in the high jump (7-0.50). Meystedt also won the Emporia State Invitational with his high mark of the season (7-2.50).

Christi Myers
Sophomore
Raytown, Mo.

Myers provisionally qualified in the high jump at the last meet of the season, the Big 12 Championships. She finished second, but recorded a career-high of 5-11.25. Myers will not compete at the National Championships because she is touring China with the Missouri volleyball team.

Michelle Moran
Senior
Wildwood, Mo.

Moran is a provisional qualifier in the heptathlon. She scored her season high point total at the conference championships (5377). This is the second season in a row that the senior has qualified in the heptathlon. Moran was an All-American as a junior in the heptathlon.

Eli Sommerfeldt
Senior
Krokstadelva, Norway

Sommerfeldt is a provisional qualifier in the heptathlon. She finished just ahead of Moran at the Big 12 Championships with 5463 points. She won the Mount SAC Relays heptathlon with an NCAA qualifying mark of 5223.

Krokstadelva, Norway

Sommerfeldt is an automatic qualifier and he is the Big 12 Champion in the decathlon (7531 points). His Big 12 meet point total is also a school record.
