Tigers and Jayhawks in a Battle for Fifth at Big 12 Championships

AUSTIN, Texas- When the Missouri Tigers take to the pool on Saturday, they will find themselves in a heated battle with Kansas for the fifth spot at the 2001 Big 12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. Missouri has 268 points and are in fiftgh place after two days of competition while Kansas has 266 points.

The Tigers got off to a good start on Friday night. The 200 medley relay team of SARAH LO, TIFFANY BOHON, ANDREA NIGH and KIM LAMBERT finished fourth with a new school record time of 1:44.30. Lo and Bohon would go on to be factors later in the night for the Tigers.

Lo, a freshman and Bohon, a sophomore, showed signs of things to come for Missouri by placing sixth and seventh respectively in the 100 breaststroke. Bohon swam lifetime best times in both the prelims and finals, improving her third-best time in school history. She posted a time of 1:05.10 in the prelims and came back in the evening to record a time of 1:04.83. Lo's seventh place time was 1:04.91.

The other Missouri finalist was sophomore ELLEN CROSS in the 100 backstroke. Cross finished sixth overall with a time of 57.81 seconds.

Sophomore LESLIE HOH just missed reaching the finals in both the 400 individual medley and 100 breaststroke events. Hoh came out of the prelims with the ninth-best times in both events, thus going into the consolations of both events as the No. 1 seed. Hoh won the 400 IM easily with a time of 4:25.95. She finished second and 10th overall in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.80. Senior KIM LAMBERT finished 11th in the event.

Missouri's 800 freestyle relay team closed out the night with a fifth place finish. The team of LIZZA IGOE, MOLLY VETTER, SARAH STOWE and KATY CHANDLER were out-touched by Iowa State. The Tigers' time was 7:33.86, the third fastest time in school history.

Texas continues to dominate the meet. The Longhorns have won all but one event so far in the first two days and have 708.50 points. Texas A&M is in a distant second with 400.50 points.

The final day of competition begins tomorrow morning with prelims at 11:00 a.m. Finals begin at 5:30 p.m. with 1650 freestyle.
