Tiger Relays Headline Day One of Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships

AUSTIN, Texas- The Missouri Tigers are in 5th place after day one of the 2001 Women's Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. The Tigers look to be in a dog fight all weekend long with Iowa State, Kansas and Nebraska for the fourth place spot in the conference.

After somewhat of a slow start in the morning prelims, the Tigers got off to a roaring start in the finals. The 200 freestyle relay team of ANDREA NIGH, KIM LAMBERT, ELLEN CROSS and TARA BROOKS finished second in a time of 1:33.24, an NCAA consideration cut time as well as a new school record. The MU record fell by over three and one-half seconds.

ANDREA NIGH, who led off the Tiger relay with a 50 freestyle split of 23.36, and lowered that time in the finals of the 50 freestyle. Her time of 23.35 is the second fastest time in school history.

Senior KARA BRAMER got off to a great start in her final Big 12 meet of her career. The Albuquerque, N.M. native qualified for the finals in the 200 individual medley, the first time in her career that she has qualifed for a championship race at the Big 12 Championships. Seeded eighth, Bramer placed sixth in a time of 2:06.03.

Two Tigers entered Missouri's all-time top five list in the 500 freestyle. Freshman LIZZA IGOE won the consolation race, placing ninth overall, in a time of 4:57.04, the fourth fastest time in school history. Sophomore SARAH STOWE placed 14th overall. Her preliminary time of 4:58.56 is the fifth fastest time in school history.

Missouri did take a blow in the three-meter diving event when senior KRISTY WANNER hit her hand on the diving board knocking her out of the finals. Wanner, who placed second on the one-meter board last night, finished 12th overall while junior ERIN WILKE finished 16th.

The University of Texas took first place in every event on Thursday and are off to a dominant lead with 364 points. Missouri has 129 points after day one.

Preliminary events for day two of the Big 12 Championships begin on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
