The Missouri Women's Tennis team won their first conference match of the season with a 5-4 victory over Texas Tech. Sophomores Julie Thomas and Caitlin Thompson showed poise and maturity in their wins and helped to give the Tigers an extra push.
Thomas defeated Noel Ruiz 6-1, 7-5. Thomas had to fight off a comeback by Ruiz in the second set for the win.
"I was really pleased (with Julie's control)," head coach Blake Starkey said. "I thought she did a good job of not letting Ruiz get to her."
Thompson defeated Sonnia Orellana 6-3, 7-5. Thompson was battling a stomach virus, but knew her team needed her points and fought through it. She and Marina Zelenovich teamed up to beat Renea Perra and Ruiz in doubles to seal Missouri's victory.
"I am really happy for our team," Starkey said. "February was a rough month for us, hopefully this shows some signs of things to come in March. We had a productive week of practice, and were ready to play."
