Purdue Downs Tiger Wrestlers 24-14

Carmel, In. - The University of Missouri wrestling team traveled to Carmel, In., where they took on Purdue Saturday night. The Tigers lost 24-14 to the Boilermakers.
Despite an impressive showing in the lower weights, the Tigers were unable to capitalize and take the dual, which was held at Carmel High School, alma mater of 174-pound captain John Kopnisky.
"Again, we didn't wrestle like I know we can. But, the weekend is behind us now. We need to focus, regroup, and look toward this weekend when we take on a tough Nebraska team," said Head Coach Brian Smith.
-At 125, 11th-ranked freshman Justin Spates continues his winning ways as he notched a second win over 5th-ranked Justin Silverstein 3-1. Although the rankings don't show it, Spates beat Silverstein in the finals to win the Mat Town Invitational. Two of Silverstein's three losses this year have come at the hands of Justin Spates.
-At 133, Jesse West was defeated by Evan Robinson.
-At 141, Tiger sophomore J.P. Reese picked up a 17-2 technical fall over Paul Sacquitne.
-At 149, Kenny Burleson defeated Brad Harper 4-0. Burleson picked up a key takedown late in the match to secure the victory.
-At 157, Purdue's Oscar Santiago defeated Jesse Jordan 5-3.
-The 165-pound match saw Purdue's Kirk Moore edge out Mark Vollmar 5-4 for the win.
-Tiger top returner John Kopnisky was defeated by Ryan Lange in an 8-3 upset early in the dual. Lang currently has the most wins for the Boilermakers with 11.
-After a tie at the end of regulation time, junior Ry Stone picked up a big takedown in overtime to win the match 5-3 against Boilermaker Jon Fitch.
-At 197, sophomore Dante Stone was pinned by 20th-ranked Jon Bush.
-Finally at heavyweight, Tiger junior Chad Hertzog was pinned by 18th-ranked Jake Vercelli.
The Tigers will return to their home state this Sunday as they do battle against the 7th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers Dec. 17th at 2 p.m. at Helias High School in Jefferson City, Mo.
