MU Soccer Takes Two Games at Home

Oct. 8, 2000

Columbia, Mo.--The University of Missouri women's soccer team boosts its season record to 8-6 with a 4-2 Big 12 Conference mark after defeating Texas Tech 3-1. The Red Raiders fall to 4-10 on the season and 2-4 in the conference. The Tigers dominated the game out shooting their opponent 24-11. MU also doubled Texas Tech in shots on goal taking 14 and leaving the Raiders to just seven.

Freshman Melissa McLellan scored her second goal of the season to put Mizzou on the board in the first half. Defender Mandy Waters created a fluid play bringing the ball up field. She sent a pass to forward Nikki Thole in the center of the field and continued her run up the right sideline. Thole then sent the ball back to Waters who delivered a one-touch pass to McLellan for the score. Both Waters and Thole received assist points for the maneuver.

Texas Tech came back to tie the score in the second half. Melanie Broshnahan gathered a pass from Rachel Mavris. The forward then lured the keeper from the box before sliding in a ground ball.

Thole proved to be the phenom of the match as she put in two goals to seal Mizzou's victory. On her first goal, defender Dyana Russell lobbed a long ball over the Raider defensive line. Thole collected it and skimmed a ground ball past the Texas Tech keeper. She came back just ten minutes later to slam a ball from Adriene Davis into the lower left corner of the net from two yards out.

The day puts Thole on top of the MU scoring column. She leads the team with 18 points from six goals and six assits.

Starting goalkeeper Megan Duncan was pulled from the game after suffering an injury. She played 54 minutes, allowed one goal and make three saves. Freshman Stephanie Krawczyk filled in for Duncan playing the remaining 35 minutes. She also made three saves and earns her second win of the season.

Missouri returns to action Oct. 13-15 when they travel to Texas to play Texas and Texas A&M.
