Women's Golf Claims Championship at Sunflower Invitational

Oct. 17, 2000

Manhattan, Kan. - The University of Missouri women's golf team claimed its first team title of the 2000-01 season today as they held on to claim the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. The Tigers carried an eight-stroke lead into today's final round over Iowa State, and came away with a two-stroke victory after a team round of 313 today left them with a three-round total of 916. Iowa State shot a 307 to close within two shots, at 918 for the tournament.

Tiger senior Amelia Moses won her first tournament of the season in a one-hole playoff against Lisa Meshke of Iowa State. Moses held a one-stroke lead through two rounds over Meshke, but the duo found themselves tied atop the leaderboard after 54 holes, with identical totals of 221. Moses, the defending Big 12 champion, claimed the title when she defeated Meshke on the first playoff hole. Earlier this fall, Moses tied for the individual title at the Big 12 Fall Preview in Waco, Texas, only to be defeated on the first playoff hole by Melanie Hunt of Texas Tech. The Coronationville, South Africa native has now won or tied for five collegiate titles in her career at Mizzou.

Moses claimed her title at the same golf course - Colbert Hills Golf Club - that saw Tiger men's golfer Mark McBride win medalist honors just two weeks ago in a men's tournament played there.

Sophomore Elin Ohlsson notched a 6th-place individual finish, which represents a career best for the Vetlanda, Sweden native. She shot rounds of 73-79-79 for a total of 231. Senior Jamie Tucker (Eureka, Mo.) was one shot behind, and her total of 232 left her tied for 7th place overall. Junior Nisha Sadekar finished just out of the top-10, as her 236 total left her tied for 12th place.

Freshman Tara Jacobsen tied for 17th place (238), while sophomore Nancy Driskill finished in 46th place while competing individually.

Next up for Head Coach Tom Loyd and his Tiger women is the Roadrunner Classic, scheduled for Oct. 30-31 in Las Cruces, N.M.
