Big 12 All-Stars Survive Scare

Aug. 13, 2000

Gmunden, Austria - Despite falling behind early, the Big 12 Men's Basketball All-Stars pulled out a tight 87-79 win over Basket Swans Basketball Club on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Missouri senior guard Brian Grawer was held scoreless in the game, but he grabbed three rebounds to help the Big 12 cause.

Playing before a rowdy standing-room only crowd on the Swans' home court, the All-Stars were shaky early, but steadied the ship and pulled to a 39-38 lead at the break.

"They came out and played us very tough early," said Coach Ricardo Patton of Colorado. "But we made the necessary adjustments and were able to get the win."

Cary Cochran of Nebraska gave the Stars a big lift off the bench, scoring nine straight points on two three pointers and three free throws to give the Big 12 squad a lead with about 10 minutes left in the opening stanza.

"I was able to get an open look and knock down a shot as soon as I got in the game," Cochran said. "That really boosts your confidence. I'm just glad to contribute."

In the second half, the Big 12 utilized a strong inside game, with Cliff Owens of Texas Tech and Chris Owens of Texas leading the way. Cliff Owens tallied 12 points, while Chris Owens added 11 points and six boards.

Jamaal Tinsley was the leading scorer for the Big 12 with 13 points. Tinsley also had six rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

"We responded well to the tight game tonight," said Tinsley. "We were able to turn it around with a lot of pressure on the ball, which forced them to take bad shots. From there, we started to play better offensively and held on for the win."

Terry Black of Baylor, Bernard King of Texas A&M and Nolan Johnson of Oklahoma rounded out the double-digit scorers for the All-Stars.

The All-Stars returned to play on Tuesday, Aug. 15, when they travel to Oberwart, Austria, to take on Gunners B.C.
