Missouri Brings Home Four All-Americans

March 12, 2000

The Missouri Tigers may not have brought home what the NCAA considers "champions," but they did claim four All-American titles from the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Seniors Derrick Peterson and Ryan Pirtle, junior Ashley Wysong and freshman Christian Cantwell all received the honors.

Peterson finished second in the 800m behind UCLA's Jess Strutzel with a time of 1:46.85. Wysong, competing in the same event, placed fourth with a finish of 2:03.95. The Nevada, Mo. native was too much for Big 12 Champion Liz Diaz of Texas. Wysong beat Diaz in both the preliminaries and the finals of the 800m.

Pirtle did not compete on the final day of competition, but ran a fast enough mile to bring home an All-American honor.

Cantwell, who finished seventh in the shot put, was the only freshman to compete in the shot put at the NCAA Championships.

Overall team scores put the Missouri men in 15th place, tying them with conference contender Baylor.
