The Missouri Tigers (13-8) couldn't be touched in their doubleheader against the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (1-5). Missouri scored 17 runs off 19 hits in 10 innings to shut out the Ramblers 9-0 and 8-0.
Stacy Gemeinhardt opened the bottom of the sixth for the Tigers with a walk. She stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Karen Williams. Gemeinahrdt scored on a Christy Skouby infield RBI-single. Dara Throneburg drove Skouby in on a single to left field. The Tiger scoring continued in the second inning. Once again, Gemeinhardt scored on a Skouby RBI-single, making the game 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
The Tigers batted around and scored six runs on four hits and five errors in the bottom of the third. With two outs in the inning, Erin Erickson reached first on an error by the Rambler right fielder. The next two batters, Stephanie Falk and Sara Vassmer hit singles into left field, loading the bases. Gemeinhardt drove a triple into left field, clearing the bases. The Rambler left fielder threw the ball into the third base dugout, allowing Gemeinhardt to score. Karen Williams reached base on an error by the shortstop, stole second and, on the next play, scored on an error by the shortstop. Skouby, who reached first on the second error by the short stop, advanced to second on a Linda Swarts RBI-single and scored on a third error by the short stop.
The game ended after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Missouri pitcher Stephanie Falk pitched a one hitter for the Tigers in the first game. She had a perfect game going until the top of the fifth inning when Sue Stanley got Loyola's only hit of the game. Falk struck out six batters in five innings of work.
Loyola was the first team to get a hit in the second game, but they couldn't get much further. Missouri began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Swarts hit a double to score Skouby and Williams. Swarts advanced to second on an Amy Farmer ground out and scored on a Dara Throneburg single to left field.
The remainder of the Tiger runs were scored in third inning. Swarts started off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Then Farmer and Throneburg both singled to load the bases. Erin Erickson reached base and Swarts scored on an error by the Rambler pitcher. Mary McGrane singled and advanced to second on the throw to score Farmer and Throneburg. Erickson scored on an illegal pitch. Kristen Burke hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score McGrane for the final run of the game.
Loyola had a chance to score in the top of the fourth inning on a Sue Stanley double with a runner on first. Sara McNeal fielded the call perfectly in the outfield and fired in home to throw out the runner.
This game also ended after the top of the fourth, with the Tigers winning 8-0.
Christy Caccavo picked up the win for the Tigers. Her record is now 2-0.
The Tigers play in the Missouri Round Robin this weekend at University Field. Their games will be at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
