Jayce Tingler Named Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week

March 7, 2000

DALLAS, TX -- Missouri freshman outfielder Jayce Tingler of Smithville, Mo., and Texas senior pitcher D.J. Jones of Forney, Texas, have been named as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by a select panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played Feb. 28-March 5.

Tingler enjoyed the finest week of his young career with a .500 (11-for-22) average in five games as the Tigers went 3-2 on the week and upended fourth-ranked Texas 5-3 on Sunday. The youngster scored six runs, batted in six more, was 3-for-3 in the stolen base department and struck out just twice in 26 plate appearances. Tingler also did not make an error in nine chances afield and threw out a Texas player at the plate on Saturday. On Sunday, he drove in three runs in Mizzou's win over Texas and made a diving, game-saving catch in left field.

Jones won a pair of games for the No. 4 Longhorns and struck out a career-high 13 batters in a 6-4 win over Missouri. He had a complete game in that start and also downed No. 7 Houston at Houston in a relief appearance. He worked 10 total innings, struck out 14, walked three, allowed 11 hits in the two outings and helped Texas go 2-1 in the road series against the Tigers.

Earlier this season, Missouri pitcher Logan Dale was the Big 12 pitcher of the week.

The Tigers play Wednesday at Southeast Missouri State, then return home to host a three-game conference series against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, beginning Friday night (5 p.m.) at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field.
