MU Swimmers Place 5th at Big 12 Championships

Feb. 19, 2000

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri women's swimming and diving team scored 425 points, the most in school history, and placed fifth at the 2000 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The Tigers finished 47.5 points behind fourth-place Kansas, but the margin is the closest Missouri has ever gotten to fourth place.

Missouri trailed Kansas by just 13.5 points heading into the final three events, but Kansas had strength in numbers in both the 200 butterfly and the platform diving events.

The Tigers still walked away with plenty of individual accomplishments. Freshman Leslie Hoh's second place finish in the 400 individual medley on Friday night qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in that event. Hoh becomes the first MU female swimmer since Sarah Samuel in 1995 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hoh will also compete in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Also qualifying for postseason were Mizzou divers Kristi Wanner and Erin Wilke. Wanner will compete at the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter competition while Wilke, who set a school-record of 354.95 on Saturday night, will compete on the platform. Wilke entered the meet having very little training on the platform since Missouri does not have a diving tower. Wanner and Wilke combined to final in all three diving events marking the first time that Missouri has had finalists in all three events at the Big 12 Championships.

Mizzou senior Tawney Larm, the most decorated Tiger female swimmer in coach Brian Hoffer's era, capped her career on Saturday night by placing third in the 200 breaststroke in a time of two minutes, 19.09 seconds, breaking the school-record by over a second. Larm was seeded seventh heading into the race and upset two Texas swimmers to take the third-place medal.

Missouri's 400 freestyle relay team capped the meet off in style. The team of Kim Lambert, Ellen Cross, Tara Brooks and Jeanna Willi shattered the school record with a time of three minutes, 26.44 seconds.

Other finalists on the final night for the Tigers were Kim Lambert (8th place) in the 100 freestyle and Rikki Janes (7th place) in the 200 backstroke.

Texas ran away from the field to claim the title with 914.50 points. Texas A&M placed second with 735.50 points and was followed by Nebraska (634) in third. Kansas and Missouri finished fourth and fifth while Iowa State placed sixth.
