The Missouri Tigers overcame their opening weekend debacle in Minnesota to take the lead in the Mizzou Round Robin. Missouri beat UMKC (0-2) and Western Illinois (1-7) in their first game of their first of three home tournaments.
Missouri handled UMKC easily in the first game. They tallied seven runs and 14 hits with one error. Sara Vassmer scored off a Linda Swarts RBI single in the first inning. In the second inning, Amy Farmer pinch hit for Vassmer and drove a double into left field. Stacy Gemeinhardt and Mary McGrane scored on the play. Vassmer and Christy Skouby both hit RBI singles in the fourth. The Tigers' final runs came from a Linda Swarts homerun in the sixth, which also scored Erin Erickson. Ingrid Werner gave up only two hits in the 7-0 victory. The Tigers had a more difficult time overcoming their second opponent of the day, but pitcher Stephanie Falk lead her team to the 5-2 win. The Tigers started off fast with a run in each of the first two innings. Gemeinhardt scored off an Erickson single in the first. In the second, Sara McNeal scored off three consecutive Melanie Dobson wild pitches.The Westerwinds were not going to give up easily. Alicia Kelly hit a long ball over the center field fence to make the score 1-2 after two innings. They tied the game in the third inning on an error by Missouri short stop Lindsey Jacoby.
Missouri bounced back in the fourth after Gemeinhardt knocked in Dara Throneburg on a fielder's choice. McGrane then singled to score Jacoby. Erickson hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to seal Missouri's victory.
