The Missouri Tigers competed against some of the nation's great track and field teams this weekend at the Iowa State Classic. The meet was a preview of things to come in two weeks at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Iowa State.
The women's distance medley relay and the men's and women's 800m runs, all secured NCAA provisional qualifying standards for the second consecutive meet. The women's DMR finished in first place with a qualifying time of 11:22.44 while the men finished in fourth with a time of 9:41.06. The race was the men's first NCAA qualifying time of the season. Ashley Wysong and Sunny Gilbert finished in first and second places with times of 2:08.57 and 2:09.50, respectively. In the men's 800m, national champion Derrick Peterson finished in first place with a time of 1:48.58. He was followed by Timothy Dunne who set the provisional standard for the first time with a finish of 1:49.66
Several former Tigers ran unattached at the Iowa State Classic, capturing some record-setting times and distances of their own. Former Tiger Rebecca Wilmes, now a graduate assistant with the track and field teams, ran the Mile to an automatic qualifying standard of 4:41.31. Missouri's Kerry Hils and Ann Marie Brooks were just behind Wilmes, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Tigers will host the annual All-Comers meet next weekend at the Hearnes Fieldhouse.
