The University of Missouri track and field teams hosted their second meet of the 2000 season turning in their best performances to date at the Tiger Invitational, held in the Hearnes Fieldhouse on Friday (Jan. 21). Behind ten first place performances, a 1-2 finish and four 1-2-3 sweeps, the Tigers showed they are ready to compete for the Little Brown Jug next week in Lawrence, Kan.
This was a non-scoring competition which gave the team the opportunity to do some fine tuning before heading into the bulk of its season. The other teams competing against the Black and Gold tracksters were Indiana State, Kansas and Southwest Missouri State.
The day started in grand fashion as Micah Shanks rewrote the MU record book in the 35-pound weight throw. The junior threw 60 feet, 2 inches to become the first Missouri athlete to throw over 60 feet. On his second throw in the finals, Shanks threw 58-4, eclipsing his own school mark (58-1/4) before bettering it two throws later. Shanks finished second in the event behind Chris Dunback of Kansas who threw 61 feet, 1/4 inches.
Columbia's own Abby Ohneck jumped to her first collegiate title in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 10 1/4 inches. She lead a 1-2-3 Mizzou sweep in the event. Finishing second for the Tigers was fellow freshman Fiona Asigbee followed by junior Michelle Moran who placed third. Asigbee jumped 17 feet, 9 inches while Moran, a 1999 NCAA provisional qualifier in the heptathlon, jumped 17 feet, 7 1/2 inches.
Defending indoor 800m NCAA champion Derrick Peterson continues to prove why he is one of the best half milers in the country. The senior won the 800m run as the Tigers claimed the top three places in the event as Peterson extended his unbeaten streak against conference competition. Peterson claimed the victory in the half mile with a time of 1:52.18. The four-time All-American took the lead on the final turn of the race outdistancing two fellow Tigers, junior Phil Councilor (1:53.12) and senior Timothy Dunne (1:53.72).
Coming from behind on the final lap of the mile run, freshman Kerry Hils claimed her first victory wearing the Black and Gold uniform. In her first-ever mile run, Hils lead a 1-2-3-4 Tiger sweep, posting a time of 4:55.38. Hils was followed closely by junior Sunny Gilbert (4:56.63), senior Anna Gullingsrud (4:59.90) and freshman Amy Chipman (5:05.47). For Gilbert, it marked the first time she has broken the 5 minute barrier.
Senior Ryan Pirtle was MU's only multiple winner on the night. The Tiger co-captain claimed the mile run in a time of 4 minutes, 12.30 seconds. Later in the evening, Pirtle was victorious in the 1,000m run (2:29.22) coming from behind to defeat Tiger freshman Stewart Kimball (2:29.85).
Other Tigers to claim individual victories were seniors William Hopson in the long jump (23-11) and co-captain Lindsey Miller in the triple jump (38-4), sophomores Steve Wade in the 3,000m (8:39.40) and Jennifer Leerssen in the 1,000m run (3:01.41) and freshman Josiah Jamesin the 600yd run (1:14.34).
Mizzou now heads to KU on Saturday (Jan. 29) to compete in the MU-KSU-KU Triangular in Lawrence, Kan. All three teams will be competing for the right to take home the Little Brown Jug. It will be Mizzou's first meet away from the friendly confines of the Hearnes Fieldhouse. MU will not compete at home again until February 19 when they host the All Comers meet.
