The University of Missouri men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2000 indoor season this evening (Friday, Jan. 14) in the Hearnes Fieldhouse. MU hosted the Missouri Invitational as the Arkansas women's team, the University of Missouri-Kansas City's mens and womens teams and Wichita State's mens and womens teams.
There were eleven Tiger athletes that claimed individual events including a Derrick Peterson 1,000m run win as well as a 1-2-3-4 finish in the men's shot put. Freshman Christian Cantwell, the strongest athlete in Missouri history, claimed his first collegiate victory winning the shot put with a heave of 55 feet, 9 3/4 inches. Cantwell was followed by junior Micah Shanks (53-9 3/4), freshman Russ Bell (52-6 1/2) and sophomore Scott Barlett (52-2).
Mizzou also swept the top three places in the men's 800m run. Leading the charge for the Black and Gold was freshman Stewart Kimball (1:54.54). Kimball came to MU ranked as the second best high school half miler in the country. Junior Blair Hansard finished second (1:56.98) while senior Jason Franken placed third (1:58.70).
Three other Tigers also claimed their first-ever collegiate titles, senior Kent Shelton in the pole vault (15-0), sophomore Brooke Ennen in the 20-pound weight throw (51-5 3/4), and freshman Josiah James in the 600 yard dash (1:14.60). Ennen's throw in the also marked a new career best.
The other Mizzou athletes to run to victory were seniors William Hopson in the long jump (24-5), Ryan Pirtle in the mile run (4:13.62), Peterson in the 1,000m (2:27.64), Mike Larson in the 3,000m run (8:40.15), junior Sunny Gilbert in the 1,000m run (2:53.51) and sophomore Damian Dean in the 200m dash (22.70).
